Thank you. It’s so good to be here, Kylie.
Kylie Kelly [00:01:33]:
Now for anyone that is tuning in, can you tell us a little bit about who you are and what you do before we we dig into the the
Britt Reber [00:01:40]:
juicier conversation? Yeah. Absolutely. My name is Britt Reber, and I own a marketing agency called Growing Your Traffic. And we specialize in search engine optimization. So, basically, we optimize websites to get to the top of search results, and that brings a massive amount of traffic and leads for local businesses, national brands, even international companies. So, we work with people all across the world. And so, yeah, we just like to bring traffic and leads to websites using SEO. That’s what we’re really good at.
Kylie Kelly [00:02:06]:
Before we hit record, I mentioned this, but I think that we kinda forget about SEO or at least I do because there’s stuff that’s especially in the online space, it’s trending to grow our email list, to grow our audience. We see it talked about bundle, summits, social media. Like, it all gets talked about so much. And I feel like SEO is like the forgotten little sister or something that we just kinda forget about, but is so powerful.
Britt Reber [00:02:28]:
Yeah. So true. It’s very powerful. And you’re right. You just don’t really see it because it’s not a short form video that’s showing up in your feed. It’s not a summit you’re getting an invite to. It’s just kind of the sneaky thing happening behind the scenes, but it can it it has a lot of power and a lot of potential to drive massive amount of leads. We’ve seen that for our clients.
Britt Reber [00:02:44]:
So, yeah, it’s definitely worth looking into and investigating.
Kylie Kelly [00:02:47]:
And still current, right, for all businesses, would you say?
Britt Reber [00:02:51]:
Oh, a hundred percent. There’s billions of searches happening every single day. And so even with AI and the shifts happening right now in the search world, that traffic is not going away anytime soon. And so if you wanna capitalize on it, the sooner you start, the better.
Kylie Kelly [00:03:05]:
Okay. So let’s get into some really, practical ways that our listeners can start to take action because I love to do that with these chats. I think it’s really important that they can go, like, okay. First step is this. We’re gonna do it. So where would somebody get started? Let’s say they’re not, they haven’t optimized their website at all. They’re not really concerned or haven’t looked into SEO before. What’s, like, that first step that they should take? Is it, like, keyword research and that kind of thing, or what would you suggest?
Britt Reber [00:03:31]:
Yeah. Great question. So I actually teach what I call my three SEO traffic secrets. And so we can dive into that. Step one is my first secret, and that is the first thing that I recommend you do. And what I call my first secret is just talk to Google. So your website needs to talk to Google correctly. And for people that aren’t really in the SEO world, not trying to spend ten, twenty, thirty hours a week learning SEO, if you wanna keep it simple, really, with just two hours a month, you can actually get results from SEO, so you don’t have to dedicate a ton of time to it.
Britt Reber [00:04:02]:
But you do have to do it. You do have to get started. And so, for me, when I tell people to talk to Google, if you don’t have a ton of time to figure it out, I say just skip the keyword research. Like, literally, just go to Google, type in your products and services, and just see what comes up. Don’t worry about competition and search volume and all these, like, data points and metrics that SEO people will tell you are important. Those things are important. Those are things that we do for our clients when we do SEO for them. But if you’re just trying to get started, just find out what people are searching for and start implementing that on your website.
Britt Reber [00:04:30]:
And so that’s really the best way to get started is just figure out what those things are people are searching for and add them on your website. Create pages and blog posts around them. Add it to your content. Basically, having those keywords on your page without worrying about if they’re the right keywords or not, quote unquote. Just figure out what people are looking for around your products and services and put them on your website. And that’s how your website is gonna talk to Google correctly. So, so I actually say skip the keyword research. I mean, still go to Google and type in your stuff and see what’s coming up, but don’t worry about all that really deep research stuff because that’s just gonna get you stuck.
Kylie Kelly [00:05:03]:
Oh my goodness. I I love that you said that. So I’ve spent, an embarrassing amount of time, like, thinking I needed to research this stuff. Right. And I love data and I know it that way. Like I do enjoy it, but then I go down rabbit holes of like rabbit holes upon rabbit holes, and then not really understanding what all those terms meant, like search volume things. So I I love that you said skip it. Just Google what you do and see what comes up and make some stuff.
Kylie Kelly [00:05:27]:
Like, so simple.
Britt Reber [00:05:28]:
Yeah. Because it can be intimidating just seeing all the data points and all the like you said, it becomes this rabbit hole where, like, people get paralyzed because they’re, like, they have fear that they’re gonna do the wrong thing or they just, like, feel overwhelmed with all the stuff that they think they need to do. So I just say skip that. Just start putting things on your website that you know people are searching for, and that’s how you can get started.
Kylie Kelly [00:05:48]:
What about if it’s a really competitive industry? Like, I think for myself, people normally search for, like, coach. Right? I don’t really call myself a coach, but that’s what people think of when they think of me. But that is a super saturated industry. Like, is it a different tactical like, how do we decide what content to create if it’s super, super saturated?
Britt Reber [00:06:08]:
Yeah. That’s a good question. So I do have a mentorship program where I go a little bit deeper into this with my students depending on their industry because there are some industries like that that are really difficult. There are some that are a lot easier to rank for, and then there’s others that are really hard like coaching. And so my advice to you just to keep it simple would be if you if anybody listening feels like they’re in one of those really competitive fields, I would say just start looking for what we call long tail keywords. So look for the longer versions of what people are searching for. So maybe coaching or life coach, online coach, business coach, maybe those things are really oversaturated and really hard to get ranked for. But there might be something more specific, like, women’s online business coach, in The United States.
Britt Reber [00:06:51]:
Like, something that’s a lot we call that a long tail keyword if it’s a lot of words strung together in the keyword. But finding things like that that people are actually searching for, you have a lot, easier time or you have a better chance of actually ranking for those long tail keywords because they typically have less competition than something like business coach or online coach.
Kylie Kelly [00:07:10]:
Yeah. That makes a lot of sense. And then that long tail keyword, that then becomes, like, the title of the blog post or something. Right?
Britt Reber [00:07:16]:
Yep. A %. Yeah. So I actually I’ll give you my biggest secret as far as talking to Google goes. You really want to have one keyword that you’re targeting set up per web page or blog post. So Google sees a page and a post as the same thing. So if it’s, like, a product page of your ecommerce or if it’s a landing page for a service you provide or if it’s a blog post. Google sees all those as the same thing.
Britt Reber [00:07:39]:
It’s just a web page. So each web page that you create should target one keyword, and you should put that one keyword. This is as techy as I’ll get the whole interview. But you should make sure to include that one keyword in your h one header tag, which is usually the title of the page. And you should only have one h one header tag, by the way. No more than that per page. So one h one header tag with the keyword in it. And then also make sure that keyword is in your meta title and your meta description, which is also called SEO title, SEO description.
Britt Reber [00:08:05]:
It just means how your web page is showing up in search results. So that’s it. It’s, again, kinda techie, but it’s the most techie I’ll get this whole interview. As as long as you have one keyword per web page or post, and then have that one keyword and your h one header tag, meta title, and meta description, that really sets up a crystal clear communication channel between your website and Google. And it talks to Google really clearly and says, this is what I want this one page or post to rank for. And then Google goes, okay. Got it. And they’ll start showing you in those search results.
Kylie Kelly [00:08:34]:
Oh, I love that. Okay. Perfect. That is great getting started advice. So what about the second secret? Let’s move on to the second secret that you’ve got for us.
Britt Reber [00:08:43]:
Yeah. So my secret number two is fresh content. So Google actually wants to promote websites that have fresh content, and that’s because they see it as relevant, engaging, they see you as up to date, and they see you as an authority and a leader in your industry when you’re posting things regularly. So for people that are busy, you can absolutely use AI. I’m not a lawyer, so I can’t tell you the legal implications and copyright stuff. There’s definitely softwares you can use to double check those things before you publish anything generated by AI. And I do always recommend adding a little bit of your own spin. But if you’re super busy and you know that something generated by AI is, legally okay for you to post, then just publish that on your website because having something published is better than nothing.
Britt Reber [00:09:24]:
So, don’t let your inability to sit down for five hours and write a really lengthy post stop you from posting content. With AI, you can really post something in five minutes. A blog post or a new web page. So I always recommend at least once a week posting a fresh piece of content on your website. So not a social media post pointing to your website, but something on your website, a new blog post, a new web page. And again, that just shows Google that you’re relevant, you’re up to date, and it can be really simple. It can be a short blog post, it can be a video that you embedded, a podcast interview you embedded. It could be something really simple and easy.
Britt Reber [00:09:59]:
But just make sure you’re consistently posting fresh content because that shows Google that you’re relevant and you’re engaging, and they actually want to promote you in their search results that way.
Kylie Kelly [00:10:07]:
I love that. And I think that for everyone listening, that’s part of that whole repurposing that we can get into. It’s like, I’m not on social media very much, but a lot of people are. Right? So what about the social media story that you’ve just spoken about? Turn that into a blog post and publish it on your website. Or for me, it’s a podcast. So I do my podcast show notes once a week at least on my blog. But I think it’s it’s also thinking about working smarter and not harder. Right? Like you said, use AI.
Kylie Kelly [00:10:32]:
Make it a short thing. It doesn’t have to be a big novel that’s getting published all the time.
Britt Reber [00:10:36]:
Uh-huh. %. And you can repurpose any content. Even if it’s like a reel you posted on social media, you can embed that in a blog post and write a little blurb about it. Like, it doesn’t have to be complicated and hard, so don’t make it hard.
Kylie Kelly [00:10:47]:
It’s so funny because I I remember the old rules. Right? I remember hearing once about how a blog post had to be so many characters like, that there was all of these rules. And that’s so intimidating because unless you’re in, like, the mood to write and to write a lengthy size thing, that’s really hard to, like, make time for when we are so busy. So I love that you said that.
Britt Reber [00:11:07]:
Yeah. %. Yeah. The rules have changed a lot. Because when I first started in SEO, it was 2013, and it was so different back then. Back then, you did have to have a really lengthy content, and it it just was so different. And content was really the king back then. And now it’s not so much.
Britt Reber [00:11:22]:
It’s still important you still should be posting content on a consistent basis, but we’ve been able to rank websites left and right that have really, like, thin, not I don’t know. Just content that’s not the way it used to have to be. Like, those 6,000 word, like, mega posts, those are out the window now. Google doesn’t really care so much about the link anymore. But my third traffic hack, my third traffic secret is actually, I think, the thing that matters more than content now.
Kylie Kelly [00:11:48]:
What’s that? Share share that with me. Sorry.
Britt Reber [00:11:52]:
Well, I’m glad you asked. So going into number three, my third traffic secret. This is my number one traffic hack. So my third secret is that you need to build massive trust with Google, and that’s what brings brings a massive traffic. So the way to do that is a really simple word called backlinks. So a backlink is just another website linking to your website. So, essentially, the more trustworthy, authoritative websites that you have on the Internet linking back to yours, the more that Google Google actually passes trust from that website to your website. So the more of those links you have floating around there on the Internet, the more Google trusts your website.
Britt Reber [00:12:28]:
And so that is the most important thing you can do. You still need to have your website talk to Google correctly. That way, you show up in the right searches. You still need to be having, fresh content published on your site on a regular basis because it shows that you’re relevant, you’re engaging. And then when you have that third piece, those backlinks, you have trust pointing to your website. That’s really where you get the big results. So don’t skip one and two, but number three is really the most important.
Kylie Kelly [00:12:52]:
I love that. And I think that works really well with what I also teach my clients. So in the mastermind and my membership, we do a lot of, like, PR, like, getting featured in PR, like Business Insider and Forbes and, like, the the publications. Right? And they backlink to your website. So that’s I didn’t even think of that being such a positive byproduct, but even things like that and collaborations and stuff. But having the especially the reputable websites that have been around for a long time that Google would already have so much trust with, that must definitely help.
Britt Reber [00:13:24]:
Oh, yeah. It helps a lot. Because not all backlinks are created equal. When you have a spammy crappy website or maybe a website no one’s heard of and there’s not really traffic going to it, when those kinds of sites are pointing to yours, it doesn’t help. It actually can hurt if you have a spammy crappy one, so be careful with, like, buying backlinks. Google doesn’t like that. But exactly like what you said, when you have those big, like, media outlets pointing to your website, that’s huge because Google trusts those websites really well, and especially bonus points if it’s in your industry because then Google starts to see you as an authority in that industry. So if you have, like, a big mom blog or, like, a a big, like, parenting website point to your website and you coach moms or you help moms, then Google gives you pretty much, like, bonus points, and they’re gonna start ranking you higher in those parenting and mom kind of categories in their search results.
Britt Reber [00:14:10]:
So, yeah, the the website that points to yours absolutely matters.
Kylie Kelly [00:14:14]:
I love that. Is there a number of backlinks that we need to, like is it just the the more the better, better, like, of the reputable ones? Did we just keep going? Or is there, like, a number where you see, like, it really make a difference?
Britt Reber [00:14:24]:
Yeah. Good question. Definitely, the more the better, especially if you’re trying to show up in national search results. For local search results, you you usually don’t need as many. But if you wanna show up nationally, yes, you’re definitely gonna need a lot more. Because when you look at your competitors in search results, they usually have a lot, like, thousands of other websites pointing to theirs. So the more you have, the better. If you feel overwhelmed, I always say just start with one a month.
Britt Reber [00:14:47]:
So finding one big website to link back to is whether that’s a PR feature, like what you’re talking about, a collaboration, like summits, bundles, being on someone else’s podcast. It could be writing a guest post for somebody. It could be winning an award or getting, like even in just your local newspaper. If you go do a beach cleanup or something, and your local paper talks about your company or your website and points to your website with that article. There’s so many ways that you can get backlinks. So I always say, just try to do one big backlink a month if that’s all you have space and time for because that actually can make a huge difference over time. And the earlier you start, the better. So don’t make it hard on yourself.
Britt Reber [00:15:24]:
Just one a month is the goal, and you’ll actually see pretty incredible results from that.
Kylie Kelly [00:15:29]:
Oh, I love that, Brit. And I think, again, just having it front of mind because how many people have been on a podcast like you and I right now? And what if I didn’t link to your website on the show notes? Like, that is such an easy thing to reach out. Like, hey, Kylie. Can you just link to my website? Like, that’s not a hard ask to do. So I think even thinking, what have I done? What have I been a part of? Where’s my word over? Almost thinking, what have I done? What have I been a part of that I can then reach out, like, retroactively and be like, hey, can you link to my website? You could probably get some done right now. Right?
Britt Reber [00:16:01]:
%. Or if you’ve ever written a guest post for somebody and they didn’t link to you, absolutely go and email that person because it’s so easy, and most people are more than happy to go in and edit what they’ve already published just to add your link. So, yeah, % worth it to go back and make sure you always have a link from all of those collaborations you’ve done in the past.
Kylie Kelly [00:16:19]:
Yes. I love this. So when somebody goes and does all of these traffic secrets, these three things that are actually really easy to do, simple, easy to do. When they do that, what do you see with your clients? Like, how long does it take to rank? And I know that’s probably a hard question because it depends on the industry. But is there, like, a bit of an average? Is it is it six months? Is it twelve months? Like, what what can we expect from doing this work?
Britt Reber [00:16:41]:
Yeah. Good question. It definitely depends on the industry. It also depends on how fast you’re going. So my agency, we have done for you SEO Go services where you pay us and our team goes and does all of this for you. So we optimize your site. We add the fresh content to your site. We get those backlinks for you on a monthly basis.
Britt Reber [00:16:57]:
And when you have our whole team doing that for you full time, you can rank really quickly. Most of our clients, we have them ranked in less than thirty days for sometimes some really major keywords even on a national level. But if you’re doing it yourself and you’re doing it with just a minimum, like, I’m talking about spending about two hours a month just doing, you know, just adding some fresh content maybe once a week, doing a blog post, and then getting one backlink a month, it does depend on the industry, but usually, it’ll take a few months before you actually start seeing some traffic coming in from Google. So again, that’s if you go bare minimum and you’re just taking it slow, going easy, and just making it kind of a side project, it probably will take a few months. But the thing about SEO is it works like a snowball. So it’s very much an investment. If you think of paid ads like a paycheck where you put it the money into the ad funnel and then the money comes out immediately, SEO is a lot more like a long term investment. So it’s kind of like putting in that time a little bit here, a little bit there.
Britt Reber [00:17:52]:
And as you go, it’ll stack and snowball. And as Google starts to rank you for some less competitive keywords, it’ll start ranking you for more and more, eventually, competitive keywords, and then the traffic just keeps growing and growing over time that way. So even though it might seem like, oh my gosh, a few months out before I start getting traffic. First of all, it’s free traffic. It’s organic traffic. So it’s usually really highly engaged. We usually see in our clients back ends that the what the traffic coming in from Google, they’re usually clicking the most, they’re buying the most, so they’re converting the most. It’s just the best traffic.
Britt Reber [00:18:24]:
And it’s free traffic. So even though it might be a few months out if you take it slow, it’s a % worth it to go after that traffic.
Kylie Kelly [00:18:31]:
Absolutely. And I think the way that you’ve described it as well, like, it does it doesn’t take that much. But two hours a month, we can be doing that. And while we’re waiting for that to build and waiting to see the results, we can be doing other things to grow our audience. So we still have that audience growth there. But then what I can imagine when the SEO catches up and we’re starting to see results from both, it could just do amazing things for our businesses.
Britt Reber [00:18:52]:
Oh, yeah. %. And, again, it’s that snowball thing. So as you start getting more and more clients coming in and you start getting reviews on your website, testimonials, you know, just as things build, your rankings just continue to go up, up, up, which makes your traffic go up, up, up. So it definitely builds over time like that.
Kylie Kelly [00:19:09]:
Yes. I love that. And on, I guess, a bit of a last note, but I think it’s really important to mention, like, have Google Analytics set up. Like, we need to know where this traffic is coming from. Right? So, if anyone’s listening that hasn’t got Google Analytics, I think this is a good little reminder to set that up as well.
Britt Reber [00:19:25]:
Yes. %. Google Analytics and Google Search Console because those are both free tools from Google, and there’s tutorials online that can teach you how to set it up. So if you’re not techie, you know, you can pay someone on Fiverr really cheap to set it up for you, or you can just watch some tutorials and get it done and, you know, knock it out in one afternoon. But it’s totally worth it because you get to see all those insights as to what are people searching for when they find you, what search results are you already showing up in that you can maybe lean a little harder into to get higher up in those searches. So, yeah, it just gives you really good data. And like you said, the traffic data too. Who’s coming to your website? Where are they coming from? What are they doing on your site? All of that stuff can really help guide your strategy.
Britt Reber [00:20:02]:
So totally worth setting up those two free tools.
Kylie Kelly [00:20:05]:
I love that. Amazing. Amazing. So, Brit, anyone that wants to dive in deeper to SEO or perhaps look into your agency, say, like, oh, I just I’m just gonna get somebody else to do it for me. Where can we send
Britt Reber [00:20:14]:
them to find out more about you? Great question. We actually just started growing our Instagram account, so you can find us there. It’s just at growing your traffic, gr0wingy0urtraffic. Super easy, growing your traffic. And you can actually download everything I talked about today, those three secrets. I have it in a PDF form, so it’s really easy to go back and look through that. And there’s a little bit little bit more ex explanation for some of this stuff too. So if you wanna download that cheat sheet, just go to growingyourtraffic.com/unlimitedtraffic.
Britt Reber [00:20:46]:
So this is my guide for basically getting unlimited traffic from Google searches just by setting up your website to rank in the search results.
Kylie Kelly [00:20:53]:
So good. Well, we’ll put the links in the show notes. I’m gonna go and download it now. Thank you so much for
Britt Reber [00:20:58]:
being here. Yeah. Of course. I I just am such a power to the people kind of person. And so I think that we need more small businesses showing up in Google searches. Because for a long time, they’ve been dominated by all the big players that have a lot of money. And so the more people that we can get, the more small business owners that we can get who actually know SEO and know how to optimize their sites so that they can show up in search results, the better. It just is better for everybody on the planet.
Kylie Kelly [00:21:25]:
Mhmm. Yes. Okay. I’m on board with that mission. I love it. Thank you so much.
Britt Reber [00:21:29]:
