THE EMAIL GROWTH SHOW EPISODE 231
If your email list feels quieter than usual right now – fewer replies, fewer clicks, less visible engagement – I want you to pause before you rewrite your funnel, change platforms, or decide something is wrong with your business.
Because here’s the truth:
Nothing is broken.
And January is not the month to panic pivot.
It’s the month to land.
And I know that’s not what the internet is screaming at you right now.
Everywhere you look, it’s
“start strong,”
“go bigger,”
“new year, new momentum,”
“if you’re not growing you’re falling behind.”
So when engagement dips even slightly, it’s easy to internalise that pressure and think, shit… is email not working anymore?
But what I want to offer you today is a wider lens – one that will save you from making decisions you don’t actually need to make.
Kylie Kelly [00:00:00]:
If your email list feels quieter than usual right now, fewer replies, fewer clicks, maybe even that strange sense that people are watching but not moving, I want you to hear this before you change your strategy, rewrite your funnel, or decide something is wrong with your business. Nothing is broken, and January is not the month to panic. Pivot.
Kylie Kelly [00:00:24]:
Are you a female business owner frustrated with battling the algorithm and looking for growth strategies that don’t involve awkwardly pointing or dancing online or throwing cash at paid ads? Welcome to the Email Growth Show. I’m your host, Kylie Kelly, visibility and email marketing strategist. I grew my email list from zero to almost 10,000 subscribers in less than.
Kylie Kelly [00:00:44]:
Two years, and the same is possible for you, too.
Kylie Kelly [00:00:47]:
Are you ready to build your email list and start making more money in your online business? Let’s head into today’s episode.
Kylie Kelly [00:00:56]:
Hi my love. Welcome back to the Email Growth Show. Today’s episode is a grounding one because over the last week I’ve had this same conversation with so many smart, capable business owners who are quietly wondering whether email just isn’t working the way it used to. And honestly, I get why. It’s January. The noise is loud, the pressure to start strong is fucking everywhere. And when engagement dips even slightly, it’s easy to internalize that as a problem you need to fix fast. But what I want to offer you today is a wider lens, one that will save you from making decisions that you don’t actually need to make.
Kylie Kelly [00:01:34]:
Here is what I’m noticing. The January inbox behavior is different. Not worse, just different. People are recalibrating after December. They’re skimming more than clicking, I know even I am. They are observing more than replying. They’re redeciding what gets their energy and what doesn’t. This isn’t disengagement, it’s actually discernment.
Kylie Kelly [00:01:57]:
And when you don’t account for that, it can feel personal, like something has gone quiet, when really people are just figuring themselves out. I want to zoom out for a moment because this is bigger than just email metrics. Just in this last week, we’ve seen two huge signals from leaders in the industry. Jenna Kutcher announced that she’s stepping away from her podcast, a platform she’s built for years. And Amy Porterfield is closing the doors on Digital Course Academy, a course that literally just had like a million dollar launch. Now, whether you love or hate these women, I am probably closer to the second camp, if I’m being honest. I still want you to let that land for a moment because these are not women reacting from scarcity. They’re just women responding to a shift.
Kylie Kelly [00:02:40]:
A shift in attention, a shift in consumption, a shift in how people want to be supported. And when leaders at that level are simplifying, when they’re recalibrating, when they’re letting go of things that still work, it actually tells us something really important. The landscape isn’t collapsing, it’s maturing. Now here’s what I’ve learned to be true. Email doesn’t respond to pressure. It responds to trust and to rhythm. And January is about re establishing both of those, not forcing momentum before it’s ready. Now, of course you’re questioning things, of course you’re wondering if you should do more.
Kylie Kelly [00:03:16]:
Anyone who cares about their business would be thinking this right now. But questioning doesn’t mean you’re behind, it just means that you’re paying attention. It’s actually a really good thing. You’ve probably wondered if you should switch platforms, change your messaging, send more sales emails to wake people up. But here’s the honest truth. January is the worst month to make decisions from urgency because urgency right now just adds to the noise. What tends to happen when people panic pivot in January is subtle, but it actually is really costly. They change their tone too fast, they override trust with tactics, they confuse their audience and honestly themselves.
Kylie Kelly [00:03:52]:
And suddenly email feels harder than it needs to be. Not because email stopped working, but because the consistency that you had built gets disrupted. So let’s talk about what actually works in January. This is the month to steady the ground. I have been speaking to all of my clients this month and we have decided to land in January. We’re making January the month that we land into 20. No big decisions, just refamiliarizing ourselves with what it feels like now in this new year before we go jumping and making big actions. Right? And it’s kind of the same with email.
Kylie Kelly [00:04:28]:
Let’s steady the ground. Let’s start to write like a human again. Let’s reconnect instead of convince. Let’s invite replies rather than forcing clicks. January emails don’t need to be louder, they just need to be clear, human, connection based, right? This is where relationship led email shines, which is what I teach, which is why you are listening and hopefully what you agree with as well. When you remind your list who you are, what you stand for and what it feels like to be in your world, only good things can happen. So email isn’t where you prove yourself in January, it’s simply where you get to reconnect. It’s the place that carries people through seasons, not just launches.
Kylie Kelly [00:05:08]:
And when you can respect that, your engagement isn’t going to disappear, it’s actually going to deepen with your audience. So if your list feels quiet right now, let that be information, not a verdict. You don’t need to fix everything this week. You don’t need to overhaul your strategy. You just need to listen to your list, to the season, and most importantly, to yourself. Think about right now. Think about one email that you can send to your list just to reintroduce yourself. What do you want 20, 26 to mean? What do you want to accomplish even if you don’t have it all figured out? Or should I say, especially if you don’t have it all figured out.
Kylie Kelly [00:05:45]:
Let’s share that with our audience, right? Let’s actually focus on reconnecting. And if that is all you do in January, it is going to set your year up to be bloody beautiful. So if you’re craving steadiness, direction and grounded momentum as we move into the year, as you know, that’s exactly the energy that I hold space for inside my Empire expansion event next week. I’m almost about to close applications, but this is your final invitation. If you are interested, you’ll find the link in the show notes for more information or Simply go to Kylie Kelly.com event. Remember, you are not behind. You’re simply at the start of a new year where people are recalibrating. This is where strong foundations are built.
Kylie Kelly [00:06:26]:
So don’t sit back thinking something is wrong. Don’t panic. Pivot to something else. Simply send one email this week, one email next week. Reconnect with that list with your audience that you’re building. Reintroduce yourself. Share something human with them. Maybe even just share what you got up to over New Year’s.
Kylie Kelly [00:06:44]:
Let’s just actually focus on reconnecting and then we can get into strategy all day long come February. All right, my love, I hope you found this helpful. Please don’t hesitate to reach out if you have any questions and I can’t wait to see you next week. Bye for now. Thank you so much for tuning into.

Here’s what I’m noticing across my own list, my clients’ lists, and honestly… my own inbox habits.
January inbox behaviour shifts.
Not worse.
Not broken.
Just different.
People are recalibrating after December.
They’re skimming more than clicking.
Observing more than replying.
Re-deciding what gets their energy and what doesn’t.
And this part matters:
That’s not disengagement – it’s discernment.
When you don’t account for that seasonal shift, it can feel personal.
Like something has gone quiet.
Like people have checked out.
But really? They’re just figuring themselves out again.
Zooming out for a second…
In just the last little while, we’ve seen some big moves from leaders in the online space.
Jenna Kutcher stepping away from her podcast – a platform she’s built for years.
Amy Porterfield closing the doors on Digital Course Academy after massive success.
Love them or not [and I have my opinions], these are not women acting from scarcity.
They’re responding to a shift.
A shift in attention.
A shift in consumption.
A shift in how people want to be supported.
And when leaders at that level start simplifying, recalibrating, letting go of things that still work – it tells us something important.
The landscape isn’t collapsing.
It’s maturing.
Here’s something I know to be true after years of doing this:
Email doesn’t respond to urgency.
It responds to trust and rhythm.
And January is about re-establishing both – not forcing momentum before it’s ready.
Of course you’re questioning things right now. Of course you’re wondering if you should do more.
That doesn’t mean you’re behind.
It means you’re paying attention.
And that’s a good thing!
But January is the worst month to make decisions from urgency – because urgency right now just adds to the noise.
What I see happen when people panic-pivot in January is subtle, but costly:
They change tone too fast.
They override trust with tactics.
They confuse their audience… and themselves.
And suddenly email feels harder than it needs to be – not because email stopped working, but because consistency got disrupted.
January is not the month to sprint.
It’s the month to steady the ground.
This is the exact conversation I’m having with my clients right now – we’re letting January be the month we land into the year.
No big decisions.
No dramatic shifts.
Just refamiliarising ourselves with what this year actually feels like.
And the same applies to email.
This is the time to:
– Write like a human again
– Reconnect instead of convince
– Invite replies rather than force clicks
– Let relationship-led email do its thing
January emails don’t need to be louder.
They need to be clear, human, and connective.
Email isn’t where you prove yourself in January – it’s where you reconnect.
It’s the platform that carries people through seasons, not just launches.
And when you respect that?
Engagement doesn’t disappear.
It deepens.
If your email list feels quiet right now, let that be information.
Not a diagnosis.
Not a failure.
Not a sign you need to blow everything up.
You don’t need to fix everything this week.
You don’t need to overhaul your strategy.
You just need to listen – to your list, to the season, and to yourself.
Here’s a simple place to start:
Send one email that reintroduces you.
Share what you want this year to mean – even if it’s not fully formed yet. Especially if it’s not fully formed yet.
That kind of honesty builds trust faster than any perfectly polished campaign ever could.
If reconnecting is the only thing you do in January?
Your year will still be set up to be bloody beautiful.
If you’re craving steadiness, direction, and grounded momentum as we move into the year – that’s exactly the energy I hold inside The Empire Expansion Event.
This isn’t about hustling harder.
It’s about building foundations that actually last.
