I'm going to be honest with you... half the people who sign up for your PDF won't even open it. That's a big part of why I'm so excited about the interactive lead magnet.
It's been that way for quite some time. So much so that I started telling my clients not to worry about making the lead magnet that great. Make the opt-in page brilliant, make the title brilliant, get people on your list, and start building trust from there.
That still holds. But there's something I'm a LOT more excited about now, and it's the interactive lead magnet. A freebie people actually use, because it gives them their own answer.
So let's talk about what an interactive lead magnet is, why it builds trust so much faster, how to make one out of what you already know, and how to get it in front of the right people (no social media needed).
What you'll learn in this post
- What actually makes a lead magnet interactive
- What happened when I turned my own expertise into an interactive freebie
- How to build one from what you already know, even if you've never made a tool
- Where to share it so it grows your list with the right people
Why so many PDF lead magnets never get opened
Information is everywhere now, even more than it's ever been. If someone wants a quick answer, they can just ask AI (I barely Google anything anymore myself).
So a 10-page PDF that sits in someone's downloads folder? It might still get you the sign-up. What it doesn't do is start the relationship, because they never actually go through it.
And that's the real job of your freebie. It's the first impression you make on someone new. If you want to go deeper on this, here's the psychology of lead magnets that convert, with Jillian Leslie, and the only lead magnet I'd create in 2026.
"It is the front door to everything, right? It is the first impression we make."
What is an interactive lead magnet?
For me, an interactive lead magnet is anything that can give a personal, specific outcome to the person using it.
Forget about which AI or which tool for a second. If you think about it from that place, interactive lead magnets have been around for ages... the old school quizzes, the scorecards. Anything where someone puts in their own situation and gets a really personalised answer back. I shared one of mine in how I got 135 leads in 30 days from one quiz.
What's changed is that with AI, we just get to do it quicker and faster. I like to think of it as quizzes on steroids.
Here's how I see the difference:
- A quiz is broad. You might have a handful of questions and four to seven possible outcomes.
- An AI-powered tool can get MUCH more granular, and much more specific to the person in front of it.
- Unless you pay for the big quiz software, it's hard to make a quiz feel like you. With AI, we can really brand these tools so they feel fully like us, without it costing a fortune.
That last one matters to me. Your freebie is an extension of your business, so it should look and sound like you.
Why an interactive lead magnet builds trust so much faster
The beauty of an interactive freebie is that it starts building trust WAY earlier... before you've even sent your first email.
I saw this in my own business. A couple of years ago I made a custom GPT for my members, Strategic Planner Sally, because I kept repeating the same strategy advice over and over again (had no idea what I was doing, by the way). I'd be asleep in Australia, they'd be up in the US, and they could play around with it whenever they needed it.
Then I thought... oh, actually, this is a great introduction to my expertise and my world. So I made it public.
It became the best lead magnet I've ever had. I'd say it easily had over 1,000 downloads, organically, just through my website and traffic, without paid ads.
But the part that REALLY surprised me was what happened next. People weren't just being added to my list... they were reaching out to work with me. That had never happened on the back end of a lead magnet before. Normally people are on my list for a little while, I build that relationship, and THEN they're ready. This fast-tracked that so quickly.
(Sally has retired now, because ChatGPT is in the process of retiring custom GPTs, but what she taught me stuck.)
How to make an interactive lead magnet from what you already know
Can I share something? I don't feel like I have all the technical knowledge either. I've built tools without being a developer, and what it really comes back to is your own expertise.
Here's what I do:
- Have a think about the lead magnet you might want to create.
- Open up Loom and brain dump everything you know about that topic. What would you teach someone? What frameworks do you have? What examples have you seen?
- Grab the transcript (that's why Loom is my favourite for this).
- Put the transcript into your AI of choice and ask it for ideas: "give me some ideas of lead magnets, of interactive things I could make from this."
- Once you have a plan, build the tool itself.
- Host it somewhere safe. I host my tools on GitHub, and Find CoLab, the app I built, lives on Vercel, because it's more secure and safer than leaving it out there where anyone could copy it. You can embed a tool on your own website too, but I think a platform like GitHub is best practice.
That last step is a big one for me. If that tool is your IP, it's kind of a scary thing to put out publicly where it can just be taken.
Make it something people actually need right now
Because AI makes building so easy, the market is getting flooded with tools. Some are brilliant. Some are... not.
I took myself on a little date recently (cinema, dinner by myself, which was lovely) and while I was sitting there on my phone, I bought a $7 PDF from a paid ad. It was meant to be some funnel thing. I bought the upsell too, because I was curious.
They were rubbish. The PDF had missing pages and didn't make sense, and the upsell didn't even sync up. $40 in total and I was SO annoyed.
So when you're the one building, always go back to your audience. What do they want? What would really help them move closer to where they want to be? Not what's cool right now (it's so tempting!) but what would actually help them.
How to get your interactive lead magnet seen (without social media)
A tool doesn't do much if it just sits on your website. So first, make sure it's behind an opt-in, and then do the basic things:
- Put it on your home page.
- Add it to your email signature.
- Pop it in your links, even if you're not on social.
Then think about who's already in your world. Reach out to half a dozen old clients, half a dozen friends... anyone in your network who'd be interested. Give it to them first and get some social proof and some testimonials, because that's really powerful.
From there, it's about what you're already a part of and who you're already connected with. If you have a couple of hundred people on your email list, you can start doing freebie swaps. If you're just getting started, there are still bundles, giveaways and online communities where you can share your lead magnet.
One word of caution though... make sure the collab is specific, and that the right people would actually be attracted to it. If the event is super broad, put in a really specific freebie. Otherwise you end up growing an email list full of people who might not be the right fit, and that just dilutes everything. Here are the mistakes to avoid when using collaborations to grow your email list.
Your first step
If you have a lead magnet right now, go and look at it. Look at the numbers. Is it actually working?
If it's not, open up ChatGPT or your AI of choice (it honestly doesn't even matter which one) and say: "hey, this is what I've got. How can I make it interactive and give my audience an experience?"
If you don't have a lead magnet yet, brainstorm one, and make it interactive from the get-go.
And just know you have options. You don't have to keep doing something that isn't working.
