THE EMAIL GROWTH SHOW EPISODE 236
Can I tell you the real reason most business owners stay on Instagram?
It’s not because it’s working.
It’s because they’re terrified that if they stop… they’ll disappear.
That their business will dry up.
That people will forget them.
That relevance is rented.
And I need you to hear this clearly:
You do not need Instagram to grow your business.
Kylie Kelly [00:00:00]:
Can I tell you the real reason most business owners stay on Instagram? It’s not because it’s working.
Kylie Kelly [00:00:05]:
It’s because they’re terrified that if they.
Kylie Kelly [00:00:06]:
Stop, they’ll disappear, that their business will dry up, that people will forget them, that they’ll become irrelevant overnight. And I need you to hear this. You do not need Instagram to grow your business. Today we’re going to talk about that. We’re going to talk about the way that you’re feeling about that particular platform and actually what you can do instead. Let’s dive in.
Kylie Kelly [00:00:30]:
Are you a female business owner frustrated with battling the algorithm and looking for growth strategies that don’t involve awkwardly pointing or dancing online or throwing cash at paid ads? Welcome to the Email Growth Show. I’m your host, Kylie Kelly, visibility and email marketing strategist. I grew my email list from zero to almost 10,000 subscribers in less than 2 years.
Kylie Kelly [00:00:51]:
And the same is possible for you too. Are you ready to build your email.
Kylie Kelly [00:00:54]:
List and start making more money in your online business? Let’s head into today’s episode.
Kylie Kelly [00:01:02]:
Hey, hey, welcome back to the Email Growth Show. Now, next week I’m hosting the Breaking Up with Instagram Challenge. And before you panic, no, I’m not telling you to delete your account or make some dramatic, I’m done with social media announcement. It’s not about burning bridges. This is about building foundations. Because here is what I’m noticing right now. There are so many brilliant women out there that aren’t burnt out. They’re not quitting.
Kylie Kelly [00:01:26]:
They’re not falling apart, but they are working too damn hard. They’re posting consistently, showing up daily, optimizing hooks, batching Reels, tracking engagement. And underneath all of that effort is this quiet fear. If I stop, I disappear. And I’m going to lovingly challenge that because breaking up with Instagram does not mean disappearing. It just means redefining that connection. Now, this isn’t your fault. Instagram has trained us to equate posting with presence.
Kylie Kelly [00:01:55]:
If you’re posting, you’re visible. If you’re not posting, you’re irrelevant. That belief runs deep. Why? Because the feedback loop is instant. Likes, story views, comments, DMs. It kind of feels like proof, doesn’t it? But here’s what happened. Visibility has become performative instead of relational. We broadcast, we analyze, we adjust, we repeat.
Kylie Kelly [00:02:21]:
And when the engagement dips, we fucking panic pivot. More posts, more effort, more pressure. And that cycle, that is exhausting. And that will lead to burnout. Now, let me tell you about my golden rule. Here’s the belief that I have built my business on. Connection compounds, but content expires. Instagram content has a lifespan of hours.
Kylie Kelly [00:02:43]:
Email though, email builds memory. Rooms, they build belonging. Communities build identity. Those are very different growth mechanics. And if you’re building primarily on borrowed land, you’re always going to feel slightly unsettled because borrowed land can change the rules any damn time it pleases. Now, let me tell you what happened recently. You might have caught this a few episodes back when I was talking about my experiment with school. I’ll put the link in the show notes for you.
Kylie Kelly [00:03:11]:
But I started my school community less than 3 weeks ago. There are now over 300 women inside. And here’s the important part. School isn’t magic. The tech isn’t revolutionary. It’s fun, but it’s nothing different. What worked was the invitation, the depth, The intention, the feeling of come closer. People don’t want more content.
Kylie Kelly [00:03:34]:
They want connection. They want proximity. They want rooms. They want conversations. They want to feel seen. Instagram gives visibility sometimes, but it’s the belonging that converts, and belonging does not require daily posting. Now, I think that we’ve confused activity with connection. We’ve confused engagement metrics with trust.
Kylie Kelly [00:03:55]:
But do you know what? You can post every single day. You can have followers and no predictable growth in your business. You can have views and no depth, which means no trust. That’s why the fear exists. It’s not actually about Instagram. It’s about dependency. And if we’re being honest, probably the toxic relationship that you might have with Instagram. And listen, of course Instagram has worked for you.
Kylie Kelly [00:04:19]:
Of course it has. Over the years, you’ve built friendships there. You’ve grown confidence there. This isn’t about pretending it hasn’t served you. I’m sure it has. The problem isn’t Instagram. The problem is when it becomes the emotional heartbeat of your business. When your nervous system is attached to your story views.
Kylie Kelly [00:04:35]:
When your sense of relevance is attached to your engagement. Now that’s not strategy, my loves. That’s just pressure. And I want to encourage you, if you were kind of thinking about, if you’re curious about this idea of breaking up with Instagram, it doesn’t mean you have to delete it. You don’t have to shame it. You don’t have to declare you’re anti-social media like I am. It just means repositioning it. Instagram gets to become a channel, not your foundation.
Kylie Kelly [00:04:59]:
A spoke, if you will, not the wheel. You can still post, but your growth doesn’t rely on it. This is the shift I care about most in 2026. Rooms create momentum. When you gather 30 women intentionally in a Zoom workshop, that energy converts differently than 3,000 passive viewers. When you invite 300 women into a community intentionally, that depth feels different than 30,000 impressions. When you email your list and say, come closer, they remember you. And memory builds trust.
Kylie Kelly [00:05:30]:
Trust will build your revenue. It will. Not the noise of Instagram. Now, I want to be clear, like, email still consistently outperforms social when it comes to conversion. Not because it’s flashy, but because it’s intimate. And intimacy builds clarity, and clarity builds action. If you want predictable growth this year, I want you to ask yourself, Where am I building memory? Where am I building belonging? If all answers point to Instagram, that is not diversification. That, my friend, is dependency.
Kylie Kelly [00:06:01]:
And the cost of staying dependent? Constant output, emotional rollercoasters, algorithm anxiety, creative fatigue, burnout, shall we say. But the possibility on the other side? Calm momentum, depth, predictability, rooms that convert, community that compounds. So no, breaking up with Instagram doesn’t mean disappearing. It means shifting from how do I stay visible to how do I deepen connection? Maybe instead of how do I post more to how do I gather my people better? How do I build community better? From how do I chase attention, how do I go viral, to how do I build belonging? And if you’re ready to explore that practically, that’s exactly what we’re doing inside the Breaking Up with Instagram Challenge next week. We’re not burning anything down. We’re building something steadier, something that doesn’t require you to perform daily to stay relevant because you’re not here to perform. You’re here to lead and leaders gather. The challenge will be hosted inside of my school community and the link to join is in the show notes.
Kylie Kelly [00:07:03]:
Please come if this is speaking to you. All right, my loves, that is it for me today. I love you so much. Thank you for being here and I’ll see you next week. Bye for now. Thank you so much for tuning into.
Kylie Kelly [00:07:13]:

TL:DR

Inside my free Skool community, Online Biz Growth (No Social), I have a challenge called The Breakup With Instagram.
This isn’t about deleting your account in a dramatic rage.
It’s about:
You don’t need Instagram to grow.
You need clarity, systems, and rooms that support the way you actually want to build.
Join us here: https://www.skool.com/online-biz-growth/about
Let’s build your business in a way that feels steady, profitable, and sustainable.
Instagram has trained us beautifully.
Post = presence.
Engagement = relevance.
Silence = invisibility.
The feedback loop is instant.
Likes.
Story views.
DMs.
It feels like proof.
But here’s what I’ve been noticing – brilliant women aren’t necessarily burnt out.
They’re just working too damn hard.
Batching Reels.
Optimising hooks.
Tracking engagement.
And underneath it all?
“If I stop… I disappear.”
That belief is not strategy.
It’s survival mode.
We broadcast.
We analyse.
We tweak.
We panic pivot when engagement dips.
That cycle is exhausting.
Because Instagram visibility is performative.
It requires constant output to maintain momentum.
And the truth?
Connection compounds. Content expires.
Instagram content has a lifespan of hours.
Email builds memory.
Rooms build belonging.
Communities build identity.
Those are very different growth mechanics.
If you want to grow your business without Instagram, you have to shift from chasing attention to building depth.
When your business lives primarily on social media, you’re building on borrowed land.
The rules can change overnight.
The reach can drop tomorrow.
The algorithm does not care about your revenue goals.
And that’s where the anxiety comes from.
It’s not the platform itself.
It’s dependency.
If all your growth, validation, and emotional regulation sit inside one app… of course it feels unstable.
Let’s talk about what actually creates predictable growth.
Not hype.
Not virality.
Not impressions.
Depth.
Recently I launched a new Skool community.
Less than three weeks in?
Over 300 women inside.
Not because the tech is revolutionary.
Because the invitation was intentional.
People don’t want more content.
They want:
When you gather 30 women intentionally in a workshop, that converts differently than 3,000 passive viewers.
When you email your list and say “come closer,” they remember you.
And memory builds trust.
Trust builds revenue.
That’s how you grow your business without Instagram being your emotional heartbeat.
Breaking up with Instagram doesn’t mean deleting it.
It means repositioning it.
Instagram becomes a channel.
Not your foundation.
A spoke.
Not the wheel.
You can still post.
But your growth doesn’t rely on it.
Ask yourself:
If the only answer is Instagram… that’s not diversification.
That’s dependency.
When you move from:
“How do I stay visible?”
to
“How do I deepen connection?”
Everything changes.
You stop chasing attention.
You start gathering people.
And leaders gather.
If you want calm momentum instead of algorithm anxiety…
Build rooms.
Build email.
Build community.
That’s where predictability lives.
If you’re tired of feeling emotionally tethered to an app…
If you want predictable growth that doesn’t rely on daily performance…
If you’re ready to shift from noise to depth…
